Sun Valley
Idaho's premier mountain resort blending outdoor adventure with sophistication
Sun Valley isn't just another ski town. This is where Hollywood royalty has been escaping since the 1930s, where the skiing rivals the Alps, and where you can helicopter to a mountaintop lunch then sip wine at a James Beard-nominated restaurant by dinner. Built by Union Pacific Railroad as America's first destination ski resort, Sun Valley still feels exclusive without being stuffy. The town splits between Sun Valley proper (think luxury lodges and manicured trails) and nearby Ketchum (more laid-back, with local bars and gear shops). But here's what sets it apart: 2,000 acres of skiable terrain, 300 days of sunshine, and summer hiking that'll make you forget why you came in winter.

Culture & Context
EXCLUSIVE DESIGNED, UNPRETENTIOUS SOUL
Sun Valley was America's first destination ski resort, purpose-built in 1936 by Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averell Harriman who wanted to fill seats on his trains. That origin story matters: this place was designed from scratch to feel exclusive, and that DNA never really left. Ernest Hemingway lived and died here — his memorial sits in a cottonwood grove off Trail Creek Road near the resort, and the Pioneer Saloon still serves a "Hemingway margarita.
" Hollywood royalty has been showing up since the Golden Age of cinema. Private jets still line the Friedman tarmac during peak season. But here's the thing: despite all the wealth on display, the town has held onto a genuinely outdoorsy, unpretentious culture.
Locals ski between work shifts. The biggest summer festival — classical music, running nearly a month — is completely free. Artists, ranchers, tech money, and ski bums coexist in a remarkably functional way.
The valley also carries deep Basque, Peruvian, and Scottish sheep-ranching heritage, celebrated every October with the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. That rural thread keeps Sun Valley from feeling purely like a playground for the rich.
Local Customs
DOWNHILL HAS RIGHT-OF-WAY
Yield to downhill skiers and riders on the mountain — they have right of way. This is the law, not just etiquette, and ski patrol takes it seriously.. Never ski or ride in a closed area on Baldy.
It can cost you your pass and earn you a Blaine County Sheriff citation (class B misdemeanor). Closed means closed, no exceptions.. The free Mountain Rides bus has ski and bike racks built in.
Locals use it constantly — it's not just for tourists.. Hailey is where many workers and families actually live. The vibe is noticeably more laid-back than Ketchum.
If you want to eat like a local without the resort markup, head 15 minutes south.. Sun Valley has a serious arts culture. The Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) on the edge of Ketchum has been running since 1971 and draws 40,000+ visitors annually.
It is free and worth your time even if you're there to ski.. Construction on State Highway 75 between Elkhorn Road and River Street is ongoing through 2026. Plan for delays during peak commute hours (7:30-10am and 3:30-6pm)..
Wildfire smoke is a real summer concern, particularly in late August and September. Some visitors find the September air quality genuinely unpleasant in dry years. Check AirNow before booking late-summer trips..
Cell service disappears quickly once you head north on Highway 75 toward Stanley or into any backcountry area. Download AllTrails maps offline and complete trail registration forms before heading out.
Safety
WATCH WINTER ROADS
Sun Valley is a physically safe place in terms of crime — the Sun Valley Police Department has 12 full-time officers covering a town that can swell by 10,000 people in peak weeks. Property crime in the central area is the main concern, not violent crime. Lock your car, don't leave gear visible.
The real risks here are natural. Winter road conditions on Highway 75 and over Galena Summit can turn dangerous fast. Call 511 or visit 511.
idaho.gov for road conditions before driving in winter. On the mountain, ski patrol enforces closed area rules strictly — skiing a closed zone is a class B misdemeanor in Blaine County.
Save the Sun Valley Ski Patrol number (208-622-6262) in your phone before you start skiing. Summer brings wildfire smoke risk in late August and September, sometimes severe enough to affect outdoor plans. The summer sun at 5,900+ feet is intense and the dry air masks how hot it really is — drink more water than you think you need.
Backcountry cell service is unreliable; always file a trail plan and download offline maps before heading into the Sawtooths or White Clouds.
Getting Around
FLY TO FRIEDMAN
Fly into Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey — it's only 14 miles from Sun Valley Resort and genuinely one of the most convenient regional airports in the mountain west. Delta, Alaska, and United cover nonstop routes from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City, Chicago, and Phoenix. A free Mountain Rides airport shuttle launched in early 2026 (trial period through April 30, 2026) with stops at the Limelight Hotel on 1st Street, Fairfield Inn in Hailey, The Elephant's Perch, and Sun Valley Lodge — no reservations needed.
Taxis run about $48 for two people from the airport. Car rentals (Avis, Enterprise, Budget, National, Hertz) are available in the terminal. If you fly into Boise instead, the Sun Valley Express runs twice daily and costs $85 each way directly to Ketchum.
Once in town: the free Mountain Rides bus covers Ketchum, Sun Valley Village, Warm Springs, and Elkhorn with ski and bike racks on every vehicle. Uber works. Ketchum's downtown is walkable.
A car is useful for day trips but not mandatory for resort activities. Note: SH-75 construction between Elkhorn Road and River Street in Ketchum is ongoing through 2026 — expect lane shifts and delays, especially during morning and evening commute hours.
