The museum is free and open to the public 24/7 — worth wandering even in the middle of the night

Why It Matters

The world's first museum hotel. Founded by art collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, it won Top 10 Hotels in the World from Condé Nast Traveler three years running (2009–2011) and the #1 Hotel in the South in 2012. The building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. The art isn't decorative filler — it's a genuine contemporary program with rotating exhibitions and site-specific installations.

The original 21c Museum Hotel opened in 2006 inside five renovated 19th-century bourbon and tobacco warehouses on Louisville's Museum Row — and it essentially invented the concept of the museum hotel. Ninety-one rooms wrap around a 9,000-square-foot contemporary art museum that's free, open 24/7, and rotates serious exhibitions. Add Proof on Main, one of the city's most acclaimed restaurants, and a daily complimentary bourbon nightcap, and you've got a hotel that gives you plenty of reasons to stay in.

This is unlike any other hotel room. Created by New York artists Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, the entire 500 sq ft space is a site-specific sculptural installation that doubles as a fully functional hotel room. King platform bed, artist-designed linens, a record player with a hand-selected vinyl collection, a curio cabinet of found objects, and an aqua-colored bathroom.
