Bombay
Heritage-meets-boho boutique. Think salvaged Burma teak, handmade Irani tiles, block-printed ikat fabrics, local truck art on the walls, and Ayurvedic copper water jugs on the nightstand. Warm and personal rather than slick or corporate.
Breakfast runs until midday — one of the latest cut-offs in Mumbai. No rush.
Why It Matters
Mumbai's first authentic boutique hotel, housed in a 1910 colonial building 100 metres from the Gateway of India. Known for its social responsibility — the hotel employs visually impaired massage therapists, operates a women-run airport car service, and sells shawls made by a women's collective. Rooms are furnished entirely with reclaimed and locally sourced materials.
Abode Bombay sits on the first floor of Lansdowne House, a colonial building from 1910, about 100 metres from the Gateway of India in Colaba. It bills itself as Mumbai's first authentic boutique hotel — and that's not just marketing. The teak floorboards were reclaimed from demolished buildings, floor tiles hand-laid in traditional Art Deco patterns, cushions stitched from vintage saris, and Art Deco antiques sourced from local markets. There are just 25 rooms, an in-house Subko specialty coffee café, a spa room, and a small shop stocked with locally made crafts. It is the anti-chain hotel taken seriously.
