Kyoto
Contemporary boutique with retro Americana energy filtered through Japanese craft. Mid-century furniture, custom Pendleton blankets, TEAC turntables, and Gibson guitars in some rooms sit alongside tatami-lined bedside tables, deep soaking tubs, Samiro Yunoki folk art on the walls, and noren curtains. The crowd is young, the lobby is buzzy, and there's always something going on.

Why It Matters
Ace Hotel's first Asia property, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Kengo Kuma. The building is a genuine conversion of the historic Kyoto Central Telephone Office. Japan's first Stumptown Coffee Roasters is on the ground floor. Three separate restaurants from acclaimed American chefs operate under one roof. It's on the Condé Nast Traveler Hot List.
Ace Hotel Kyoto is the brand's first Asian outpost — and probably the most architecturally significant hotel in the Ace portfolio. It lives inside and around the former Kyoto Central Telephone Office, a Taisho-era landmark reworked by Kengo Kuma and Commune Design into 213 rooms spread across a historic wing and a bold new addition. The lobby hits you immediately: a doughnut-shaped, hand-hammered copper front desk sits beneath a Japanese-style kigumi interlocked timber ceiling, with a massive textile by Shobu Gakuen and enormous ceramic pots by Kazunori Haman. It's louder, younger, and more international than most of Kyoto — which is either the point or the problem, depending on who you ask.
