Akureyri - Berjay
Nordic minimalist with local art and warm, community-feel touches. Think hygge: fireplace in the lobby lounge, a cozy garden with blankets and snacks, modest but well-thought-out rooms. Not flashy, but genuinely comfortable and authentically Icelandic.
Book a 5th floor room for the best fjord and mountain views — Twin Superior, King Superior, King Deluxe, or the King Suite all sit up there.
Why It Matters
Tablet Hotels-listed property in a converted university building. The only substantial full-service hotel of its kind in Akureyri — the geothermal pool is directly opposite, the bar runs a daily happy hour, and the hotel's Northern Lights wake-up call service means someone actually rings your room if the aurora appears overnight.
Berjaya Akureyri Hotel occupies a renovated historic building — the former University of Akureyri — in Iceland's second city and self-styled Capital of the North. Opened in 2011, the hotel fits 99 rooms across clean Nordic lines, blonde wood, and local art that reference the town's creative community. The utilitarian exterior gives nothing away, but inside it's warm, well-designed, and genuinely pleasant. It's the most practical full-service base in the region: the geothermal swimming pool is literally across the street, the town center is a short walk, and the Diamond Circle road trip and Hlíðarfjall ski slopes are both on the doorstep.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Iceland's famous thermal public pool is a 2-minute walk directly across the street. Multiple hot tubs, outdoor pools. Open year-round. Not operated by the hotel but so close it's effectively an amenity.
The hotel's private garden and patio off the restaurant and bar is set up with blankets, drinks, and snacks for guests to enjoy both the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter. Fireplace available in the lounge.
The hotel operates a Tour Desk (via Tourdesk) that books guided experiences across northern Iceland — glaciers, waterfalls, volcanoes, whale watching, snowmobiling, and Diamond Circle tours. Browse and book through icelandhotelcollection.tourdesk.is.
Hotel front desk will call your room if the northern lights are visible overnight. Available during the aurora season (roughly October–April). One of the more useful and genuinely popular services the hotel offers.
Mt. Hlíðarfjall ski resort is nearby and consistently described as some of Iceland's best skiing. The hotel markets itself as a base camp for the slopes. No shuttle confirmed — transfers would need to be self-arranged.
