Why It Matters

Ranked #2 of 87 hotels in Montevideo on TripAdvisor. One of just a handful of properties in the city endorsed by both Tablet Hotels and Mr & Mrs Smith. The rooms-as-portraits concept — where every decor detail connects to the Uruguayan figure the room honors — is genuinely executed, not just marketing.

A restored Art Nouveau mansion from the 1890s, sitting directly across from Plaza Zabala in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja. Italian owners Cate and Dario opened it as a hotel in 2015, and the concept is simple: 15 individually designed rooms, each dedicated to a legendary Uruguayan — artists, poets, tango musicians, footballers. It's part bed-and-breakfast, part cultural introduction. No pool, no restaurant, no spa to speak of. But the rooftop hot tub with city views, the library stocked with retro novels, and a breakfast that guests consistently rave about make it one of the most charming stays in Montevideo.
