Amangalla
Colonial heritage meets pared-back Aman minimalism. Think antique four-poster beds and planter's chairs in rooms that are never fussy, a Great Hall with live music and chandeliers, and a spa — nicknamed 'The Baths' — that feels genuinely ancient with its candlelit archways and hydrotherapy pools. Formal enough to feel special, relaxed enough that you can wander in from a hot afternoon walk.
The Sunset Balcony on the top floor of the main house is residents-only — ask your butler to arrange cocktails there as the sun drops over the fort walls
Why It Matters
One of the most architecturally authentic luxury hotels in South Asia, set within a living UNESCO World Heritage fortress. The only Aman property occupying a genuine piece of colonial civic infrastructure — formerly the Dutch commander's quarters, then a celebrated 19th-century hotel. The spa hydrotherapy suites are widely considered the best in Sri Lanka. Rates include daily breakfast, afternoon tea, butler service, morning yoga, and 30-minute complimentary hydrotherapy access.
Amangalla sits inside the 17th-century Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka's south coast — in a building that spent over a century as the New Oriental Hotel before Aman got hold of it in 2004. Australian architect Kerry Hill stripped away the faded grandeur and left something precise and unfussy: 300-year-old polished Burmese teak floors, lofty ceilinged rooms with four-poster beds and pettagama chests, a garden that dates to the 1860s, and one of the best spa complexes in Asia. The fort is right outside the door; you walk through the hotel's arched veranda straight into colonial-era streets lined with old churches and boutiques.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Walking tour through a working cinnamon plantation with a local planter, followed by a cinnamon-themed lunch.
Guided walking tour of Galle Fort with a knowledgeable Amangalla guide. The route visits the old District Judge's house, the cricket fields, temple, mosque, and finishes at the iconic lighthouse on the ramparts where locals fly kites at sunset. The fort's history dates to 1588.
Guided excursion approximately 90 minutes north to Bentota to explore the work of Geoffrey Bawa, the most influential architect in modern Sri Lanka. Includes Lunuganga (Bawa's personal estate) and Brief Garden, the country home of landscape architect Bevis Bawa.
A working low-country tea plantation tour followed by a scenic boat ride and cycling to a local village for traditional hoppers cooked over a fire.
Visit the Yatagala and Rhummasala temples, 30 minutes from Galle. Yatagala is one of the oldest temples in the region — a 1,200-year-old rock temple accessed via 120 steps through tropical jungle. Rhummasala was built by the Japanese after the 2004 tsunami.
Ceylon tea served with homemade scones, clotted cream, strawberry jam from Nuwara Eliya highlands, finger sandwiches, and savories. Served in the Veranda, Great Hall, Library, Pool Courtyard, Sunset Balcony, or in-room.
Dinner at a candlelit ambalama (traditional pavilion) set on a private island in a sea of rice paddies. A personal chef cooks traditional Sri Lankan roti beneath the stars, served by flaming torchlight. Begins late afternoon with a cultural show unique to the southern province. One of the most theatrical dining experiences in Sri Lanka.
Curated children's programme including mixology classes, kite flying, treasure hunts, and junior yoga.
Daily group yoga session in the open-sided Garden Pavilion. Included in all stays.
Begins with sunrise on a private paddy island, followed by a sound bath with Tibetan singing bowls, a 90-minute couples massage, a wholesome Sri Lankan breakfast, and a visit to the ancient Yatagala temple. A good structured half-day if you want to do something meaningful without booking a multi-day programme.
Complimentary bicycles to explore Galle Fort and its surrounding historic landmarks at your own pace.
Complimentary access to one of Galle's most atmospheric tennis courts on the hotel grounds.
Boat excursions from Mirissa (about 30 minutes away) for blue whale and sperm whale sightings. Best from November to March/April.
