Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel
Monastic calm meets understated Italian luxury. Whitewashed walls, terracotta tile floors, vaulted ceilings, and lime-washed surfaces set the architectural tone. The design is deliberately sober — no hand-painted Amalfi tiles or chintzy coastal kitsch — which actually makes the sea views hit harder. Think contemplative retreat for people who also want a Jacuzzi.
Ask for a room with a private terrace — not all rooms have one, and the common terraces, while great, don't replace having your own Jacuzzi over the sea
Why It Matters
One of the very few working former convents on the Amalfi Coast still operating as a luxury hotel. The cannon was actually invented here in 1924 when the property was called Hotel dei Cappuccini. Named one of TIME Magazine's World's Greatest Places and included in Travel + Leisure's 2024 It List. The property has a resident Franciscan friar — Friar Marcus — who leads meditation and helps craft the hotel's signature house amaro from convent-garden botanicals.
A 13th-century Capuchin convent carved into the cliffs above the Amalfi harbour, now operating as a five-star luxury hotel. Completely renovated in 2023, the property preserves its original cloisters, a working Baroque chapel with marble altar and Majolica floor, and centuries-old stonework — then layers in 52 rooms and suites, two restaurants, an infinity pool cut directly into the rock face, and an award-winning spa. Perched 80 metres above sea level, it sits just 600 m from Piazza del Duomo, close enough to walk into town but removed enough to actually feel quiet.
