Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort
Wild luxury meets conservation resort. Teak floors, Thai silks, and indigenous artworks give the rooms warmth, while the grounds are a proper jungle. Activities skew adventurous — sidecars, sky bikes, elephant walks — but the spa and pool ensure it doesn't feel like a camp.
Book the Explorer's Arrival (private car + longtail boat up the Mekong) — it adds about 2 hours but sets the tone for the whole stay
Why It Matters
One of the only resorts in the world where you can sleep in a transparent Jungle Bubble beside free-roaming rescued elephants. The elephant program, in partnership with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation since 2003, has rescued over 60 elephants from city streets and illegal logging camps. The Canopy Treetop Dining experience — just 4 seats suspended above the jungle — won Best Innovative F&B Experience at the 2024 Hospitality Awards.
Perched on a wooded hilltop where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge, this 63-room resort sprawls across 160 acres of jungle above the Mekong and Ruak rivers. The elephant camp — run in partnership with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation — is the real draw: rescued elephants graze on the hillside below your balcony and greet you by longtail boat on arrival. Two Michelin Keys in 2024 and a #48 ranking in T+L's World's 100 Best Hotels in 2023 confirm this isn't just a gimmick.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A deeper dive into mahout culture: learn the historical and cultural traditions of elephant caretakers, and make traditional medicinal food for the older rescued elephants under mahout guidance.
Observe the natural behaviour and playful interactions of the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation's rescued elephants in their habitat. No riding, no tricks — observation-based and ethically designed. Every booking triggers an additional THB 2,000 donation to the GTAEF.
Join the elephants and their mahouts on their daily jungle walk. Watch them splash in the river, snack on leaves, play in the mud, and socialise with the herd. The closest most guests will ever come to wild elephant behavior. Elephant rides were permanently phased out in mid-2020.
The signature arrival experience: private car from Chiang Rai Airport to Chiang Saen, then a longtail boat up the mighty Mekong to the resort's private jetty where a welcoming committee of elephants greets you. Takes approximately 2 hours. Only available during daylight hours.
A day trip by longtail boat up the Ruak River to Sop Ruak, the three-country meeting point. Includes visits to Wat Pa Sak, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Phra That Phukhao. Part of the all-inclusive Discovery Package. Subject to travel authorisation and visa restrictions.
The world-class Hall of Opium Museum is located directly across from the resort. Covers the Golden Triangle's infamous poppy cultivation history and the late Princess Mother's alternative livelihood project. Included in the all-inclusive Discovery Package.
Award-winning three-country-view infinity pool with an integrated Jacuzzi, described by the resort as potentially one of the most stunning pools in Asia. Overlooks the valley with elephant grazing below. Poolside sun loungers and poolside bar service.
One-on-one sessions at the resort's outdoor Muay Thai ring with a professional fighter. A pair of Muay Thai shorts to keep as a souvenir.
Self-guided or guided walks through 160 acres of gardens and bamboo forest. The estate is large enough that morning walks often include elephant sightings without any formal program. Birdwatching is also noted as an organised activity on the grounds.
Ride through northern Thailand's jungle and countryside in a vintage-style Royal Enfield Classic 500 sidecar with a private driver. Routes pass elephant pastures, ancient Lanna sites, and remote border regions. One of the more fun ways to explore the terrain.
A tandem pedal bike suspended 40 metres above the forest floor, gliding along a 300-metre zipline cable above the 160-acre bamboo forest. You can spot rescued elephants and bird species below while looking out over the Mekong River and three country borders. For guests aged 10 and above.
Half-day class starting with a guided market tour to source northern Thai ingredients, then kitchen session with the master chef: curries, soups, appetisers, traditional desserts.
