Amsterdam Prinsengracht
Dutch maximalist design hotel — playful, art-forward, locally obsessed. Quirky without being gimmicky, comfortable without being boring.
Book a canal-view room for classic Amsterdam watching, but request a higher floor to minimize street noise
Why It Matters
Entirely designed by Marcel Wanders, housed in Amsterdam's former public library, with the city's largest hotel terrace (Prinsengracht Suite), a Michelin-starred restaurant (Renvy by Randy Karman), and a UNESCO canal-belt address. One of the most architecturally distinctive properties in Northern Europe.
This was Amsterdam's public library before Marcel Wanders got hold of it. Now it's 122 rooms of Dutch maximalism: wooden clogs nailed to walls, giant shouting prince statues in the lobby, Delft blue ceramics everywhere, and fish-spoon hybrid wall art in every room. The observatorium-themed atrium with its moonlike orbs and deconstructed front desk is a genuine showstopper — and Wanders' studio is just a few streets away in the Jordaan. Rooms run 26–141 sq m, complimentary minibar and genever happy hour come standard, and a Michelin-starred chef (Randy Karman, Renvy) now anchors the dining lineup. But look, there's no pool, some canal-view rooms pick up street noise, and the design is decidedly not for everyone who prefers things calm and neutral.
