Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel
Gothic-monastery-meets-Czech-Cubist luxury. Calm, serious about history, surprisingly atmospheric without being stuffy. Corridors are labyrinthine in the best way.
Book a Thursday stay and sign up for the monastery tour at check-in — it's hosted by an actual resident monk and costs only a small donation (~$22 USD per person). Spots are limited.
Why It Matters
One of the few hotels in Europe where active monks still reside on the same grounds. The property spans seven medieval buildings including the 13th-century St. Thomas Monastery and a brewery that dates to 1358. Holds a Michelin Key award and the Green Key eco-label. Exclusively brews its own St. Thomas dark lager on-site from the original monks' recipe.
Seven historic buildings, one 13th-century monastery complex, and a handful of Augustinian monks who still live next door. The Augustine sits directly below Prague Castle in the Malá Strana quarter, a Luxury Collection property reshaped by designer Olga Polizzi into 101 rooms that feel genuinely different from each other — vaulted stone ceilings here, original monastery doors there, and Czech Cubist furnishings throughout. The Refectory Bar, with its 19th-century archangel frescoes overhead and cocktails named after each archangel, is worth the stay on its own.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel offers cocktail classes, likely themed around the Refectory Bar's Angel Cocktails and the monastic herb garden.
Cooking classes offered on-site, tied to the Czech modern gastronomy ethos of the Augustine Restaurant kitchen.

Guided exploration tours of the hotel and surrounding neighbourhood, arranged through the concierge.
Available on Thursdays for hotel guests (some sources say Tuesdays also). Led by a resident Augustinian monk — including at times a 92-year-old friar from New York — the tour covers the hotel's history, the St. Thomas Brewery cellar, the ornate Baroque St. Thomas Church, and the 13th-century private monastery library, which holds books that may be the last surviving copies in the world. A donation to the monastery is requested (~$22 USD per person). Spots fill up; sign up at check-in.
The central courtyard garden features preserved remains of the medieval monastery, including the original sundial. Open to guests for cocktails, relaxation, and seasonal events including summer garden BBQs. Entirely free to use.
