One of only a handful of AWOL-branded properties from Lark Hotels — the second AWOL to open after Provincetown. It occupies a genuine 19th-century sea captain's home while managing to feel contemporary and unstuffy. Complimentary buffet breakfast, free bikes, free beach chairs, and pet-friendly cabins make it an unusually complete package for the price point.
AWOL Kennebunkport is a 17-key boutique hotel set in the former Captain Melville Walker house — a historic sea captain's residence — on a wooded lot just a few minutes' walk from Kennebunkport's Dock Square. Massachusetts-based design firm Elder & Ash overhauled the property into something that feels more like a stylish coastal camp than a traditional New England inn: sandy neutrals, cement-surround gas fireplaces, custom white oak beds, and original art by Brooklyn painter Alex Soffer. The property mixes six suites in the main house with eleven freestanding cabin studios on grounds shaded by centuries-old pine, elm, and balsam fir.

Standalone cabin with a private exterior entrance. Set among the pine and birch trees on the property grounds. Some units are pet-friendly (dogs up to 70 lbs, $50/dog/night). A solid pick if you want more privacy than the main house offers.

Cupola Suite
The penthouse of the main house, incorporating the historic cupola at the very top. Two-level layout with sweeping views over the surrounding pine canopy and neighborhood. The most architecturally dramatic room on the property.
KingDeluxe Cabin Studio
Upgraded cabin version with enhanced finishes. Private exterior entrance with wooded setting. A step above the standard Cabin Studio in room features.
KingDeluxe Cabin Studio w/ Soaking Tub
The deluxe cabin unit with a Japanese soaking tub added. Ideal if you want the standalone cabin privacy plus the soaking tub experience without stepping up to the Premium Cabin.

Main house suite with a working gas fireplace with a concrete surround — the signature design element across the property. Cozy for shoulder-season stays.

KingPremium Cabin Suite
The flagship cabin. Separate living room and bedroom, Japanese soaking tub, large concrete walk-in shower, private patio with gas fire pit, and dining table. Set in the pine grove and the most sought-after unit for a Maine escape feel. Some units are dog-friendly.
KingWalker Suite
Named after the original sea captain owner, Captain Melville Walker. One of the more spacious main house suites, with a soaking tub and refined finishes referencing the property's maritime heritage.

Staff curate personalized local itineraries covering seafood spots, secluded coves, beaches, hiking, brewery trails, and more. A hotel-produced local guide is also available on the website.
Gooch's Beach is walking distance from the hotel. Aquaholics, a local operator, runs surfing lessons and rents kayaks and paddleboards for those preferring calmer waters.
Staff can point guests toward whale watching tours and Schooner Eleanor sailboat cruises along the Kennebunkport River and out to the Atlantic. Whale watching runs May through October.
