Basq House is a 32-room boutique hotel tucked into a laneway in the dead centre of Byron Bay village. Opened in June 2024, it's the work of Melbourne co-owners Matt Walsh and Shane Wilkinson, designed by StudioFAB's Matt Dalby with interiors by French local Léo Terrando. The whole thing is built around a temperature-controlled magnesium pool flanked by cabanas and daybeds — a contemporary riff on the Moroccan riad concept. Rooms run 20-30 sqm (compact by any measure), but they're sleekly done: burnt orange linen drapes, bespoke timber joinery, king beds with white cotton, Mr Smith toiletries, and minibars stocked with local produce. There's no restaurant on site. That's a deliberate call — Byron's best cafes and bars are literally a one-to-three-minute walk, and the hotel leans into it.

For groups of three or more, including families. Adjoins a Pool Room with a Lane Room or Town Room via a shared lobby. The only room configuration that can sleep more than two adults. Reviewers praise the setup for families with young kids — each room has its own balcony and the connecting lobby gives useful separation. Baby cot compatible.

Guest Room
The lead-in room type — a window overlooking the staircase rather than a balcony or pool view. Most compact option. Same design quality as the rest of the house and every bit as well-appointed, just without the outdoor space or aspect views.

Overlooks Fletcher Lane via a large balcony — quiet laneway aspect rather than pool or street. Good pick if you want the most outdoor space on the balcony and don't need the pool view. Same high-spec fit-out as the rest of the property.

The most recommended room type for couples. Eight rooms available, all looking over the pool and courtyard. Two formats: some have a full balcony with table and chairs; others have a north-facing Juliette balcony with a more generous interior. Either way, pool attendants come to you with cocktails and snacks — you barely need to leave the room. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout.

The entry-level room at Basq House, but don't let that fool you. These petite rooms come with a balcony that looks directly over the courtyard magnesium pool. Compact at the lower end of the 20-30 sqm range, but fitted with the same design language as the rest of the hotel — king bed, burnt orange linen, bespoke timber joinery, curvy bathroom, Mr Smith toiletries, minibar with local goods. Note: baby cots cannot be accommodated in Pool Studios.

The centrepiece of the hotel. A heated magnesium pool surrounded by sun-drenched daybeds, cabanas and loungers. Pool attendants circulate for cocktail and snack orders. Magnesium water is gentler on skin and eyes than chlorinated pools and has associated therapeutic benefits for stress and muscle relaxation. Open 7am-8pm daily, hotel guests only.
