Why It Matters
Asheville's only Michelin Key hotel — awarded for two consecutive years starting September 2024. Formerly the historic 1889 WhiteGate Inn & Cottage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lark Hotels gutted and reimagined the space, reopening it in June 2023 as a design-forward, community-rooted inn that genuinely punches above its 14-room size.
A beautifully restored 1889 Queen Anne house in Asheville's quiet Chestnut Hills neighborhood, turned 14-room boutique inn by Lark Hotels after a full renovation in 2023. It's small on purpose — each room is uniquely furnished with vintage pieces sourced from thrift and antique shops, local artworks on every wall, and a handwritten guide from a different Asheville creative (a chef, a brewery GM, an arts festival founder) tucked inside. The vibe is part guest house, part living gallery. No TVs, no generic furniture, no buffet breakfast line — just a self-serve pantry stocked with local snacks and a grab-and-go breakfast each morning. It's the only Asheville hotel to earn a Michelin Key, and it's done it two years running.

Every room comes with a handwritten or printed guide by a different Asheville local — past contributors include the founder of the LEAF arts festival, chef Jacob Sessoms, the founder of the Wild Bird Research Group, and the general manager of Wedge Brewing Co. It's a genuinely distinctive touch that most guests rave about.
