Buca di Bacco
Classic Italian beachfront hotel with genuine century-old character. Warm, family-run feel rather than slick resort polish. Think coral-motif fabrics, Vietri floor tiles, dark-wood furnishings, and a veranda restaurant that has fed everyone from Hemingway to Grace Kelly.
Always book directly through the official site or by phone/email — you get 10% off at the restaurant plus complimentary minibar soft drinks that you won't get through OTAs.
Why It Matters
One of the oldest continuously operating hotels on the Amalfi Coast, founded in 1916 by the Rispoli family. It sits directly on Spiaggia Grande — the only major hotel with true beachfront access at that level — and its guestbook reads like a 20th-century literary and celebrity hall of fame: Hemingway, Steinbeck, Jacqueline Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Eduardo De Filippo, and Vittorio De Sica.
The Rispoli family has been part of Positano's story since 1916, when Salvatore and Carolina returned from New York to open what would become one of the Amalfi Coast's most enduring addresses. Right on the Spiaggia Grande — the main beach — the hotel puts you inside Positano rather than above it. No elevator down to the waterfront, no 10-minute staircase slog: the sand is literally steps away, and the ferry dock is a two-minute walk. Rooms come dressed in hand-painted Vietri tiles, coral-motif textiles, and marble bathrooms; most look straight out to sea. The name itself was coined by Léonide Massine, the Ballet Russes choreographer, who came here to drink and play chess.
