Osaka Shinsaibashi
Contemporary Japanese minimalist with a serious historical centerpiece. Clean rooms with smooth wood paneling, crisp white linens, and low sofas at the windows. The design doesn't compete with the temple — it frames it.

Why It Matters
The only hotel built around a fully functioning 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple. The Mitsutera main hall — an Edo-period wooden structure rebuilt in 1808 — is preserved intact inside the building's glass atrium. Monks still lead daily morning services that guests can attend. Guests can also do sutra drawing (copying Buddhist texts and images) in the main hall. The rooftop SkySpa adds a free open-air bath and Finnish loyly sauna 15 floors above Midosuji Avenue.
A 15-story contemporary hotel built directly around a functioning 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple. The Edo-period main hall of Shippozan Daifukuin Mitsutera Temple sits inside a glass atrium at the hotel's entrance, where monks still conduct daily morning services. Guests pass the ancient wooden temple hall on their way to check in. It's genuinely unlike anything else in Japan's hotel landscape.
