Why It Matters
Said to be the most photographed hotel in the world during the Cannes Film Festival — over 6,000 photos a day — and a protected historical monument. The only hotel with its own beach club on La Croisette. A five-year, multi-million euro restoration completed in 2023 brought back the original marble columns (hidden under eight layers of paint) and installed a full underground events complex. The concierge team has been led by the same person since 2003, and staff of 500 swells to 800 in peak season.
The Carlton is the undisputed queen of La Croisette — a cream Belle Époque landmark that occupies an entire city block facing the Mediterranean, its twin domed towers instantly recognizable from half a mile away. Opened in 1911 and fully gut-renovated by acclaimed French designer Tristan Auer (the same man behind the reimagined Hôtel de Crillon), it reopened in March 2023 as a Regent — one of IHG's most luxurious flags — with 332 rooms, 53 suites, 37 residences, a new infinity pool, and its first beach club dating back to 1930. This is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch a Thief, where Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier, and where Elton John shot 'I'm Still Standing'. The Film Festival descends on it every May and the place goes properly berserk.
