Casa Antonieta
Colonial-meets-contemporary boutique. Calm, unhurried, and personal — feels more like a well-designed private home than a hotel. Built around a riad-style central courtyard. Strong artisan craft DNA throughout.
The cold brew at Muss is made by grinding beans with cacao nibs — worth ordering before anything else
Why It Matters
Listed in both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. One of very few small boutique hotels in Oaxaca Centro operating out of a genuine 1529 colonial structure, with rooms furnished using locally commissioned artisan pieces. Has its own all-day café (Muss) and rooftop cocktail terrace (Amá).
Casa Antonieta is a nine-room boutique hotel set inside a colonial building that traces its roots to 1529 — old even by Oaxacan standards. The original architecture is proudly on show: stone arches, symmetrical arcades framing a central courtyard, hand-applied clay plaster on the walls. But the rooms themselves are unmistakably contemporary, mixing local artisan crafts, Zapotec woven rugs from Teotitlán del Valle, macuil wood furniture, and rain showers edged with river rock. The hotel started life as a convent, then became a private mansion in the 1890s, and was reimagined by founder Helwig George and Mexico City architect Mariana Ruiz of At-te, opening to guests in April 2018.
