Why It Matters
The first hotel ever opened by the Cipriani family (the Harry's Bar dynasty), inside a landmarked Beaux-Arts ferry terminal. Thierry Despont designed the interiors. Hotel guests are treated as honorary members of the private club, accessing spaces most New Yorkers can't. The Presidential Suites are finished with Loro Piana cashmere interiors.
Casa Cipriani occupies the 1909 Battery Maritime Building, one of New York's last intact Beaux-Arts ferry terminals, right at the southern tip of Manhattan where the Hudson and East River meet. Interiors by Thierry Despont — the architect who restored the nearby Statue of Liberty — channel the first-class decks of the great 1930s ocean liners: polished mahogany, Guastavino tiled arches, Art Deco details, and floor-to-ceiling water views. It's simultaneously a boutique hotel of 47 rooms and a private members club, and hotel guests get honorary member access to the whole fifth-floor club floor — Jazz Café, bars, terrace with Statue of Liberty sunsets, and all.
