Château Royal Berlin
Art-forward boutique hotel that feels more like a privately curated gallery than a place to sleep. Retro-inspired but genuinely authentic rather than themed. Relaxed and cosmopolitan — not stiff or precious. The kind of place where the bar is buzzy with both guests and locals, and the art on the walls is the real deal.
The rooftop terrace is easy to miss — ask at reception about access, it only operates seasonally in summer
Why It Matters
Each of the 93 rooms has a permanently displayed original artwork by a different contemporary artist — so the whole hotel is effectively a live exhibition. The buildings also have serious Cold War intrigue: between 1977 and 1989, the Stasi are believed to have operated a surveillance station here, watching the U.S. Embassy directly across the street. Co-founded by Stephan Landwehr of Grill Royal fame, the hotel brings that same socially-connected, art-world energy to hospitality.
Château Royal is a 93-room art-hotel in Berlin Mitte that opened in September 2022, created by the team behind the legendary Grill Royal restaurant. The two historic buildings — the older dating from 1880 — were comprehensively renovated with a roof extension by David Chipperfield Architects, and then filled with original commissioned artworks from over 100 contemporary artists, one per room. Interior design by Studio Irina Kromayer channels Berlin's 20th-century heyday: herringbone parquet, nickel finishes, low seating, wooden wall panelling, and vintage pieces throughout.
