Why It Matters
The only hotel in George Town where you sleep in the former servants' quarters of the Blue Mansion and wake up looking directly at the famous azure facade across Leith Street. Virtue TCM at The Qing Suites is the first traditional Chinese medicine spa in a heritage hotel in Southeast Asia. Dining is curated by Michelin-starred Chef Su Kim Hock (Au Jardin, one star for four consecutive years). Children under 12 are not permitted, which keeps things genuinely quiet.
Opened in December 2025, The Qing Suites is what happens when a row of 1904 shophouses gets reunited with its past. These five terrace houses spent over a century as the servants' quarters for Cheong Fatt Tze's iconic Blue Mansion across the street — then got separated from the estate after the tycoon's death, and have now been carefully restored and brought back into the fold. The result: 13 generously sized suites, each named in Chinese calligraphy, dressed in earth tones and bespoke local woodwork, and quiet enough to make Penang's celebrated street food scene feel optional. Southeast Asia's first TCM-focused heritage hotel spa, Virtue TCM, sits right inside, making wellness the central pillar rather than an afterthought.

Garden Suites
The biggest suites in the building at 60.1–67.3 sqm, on the ground floor with direct access from the central courtyard. Stately king beds on cool terracotta floors (not timber — a notable difference), a comfortable daybed nook with writing desk, and a private walled garden with al fresco seating and lush tropical greenery. Standalone bathtub, custom furniture and calligraphy by local artisans, espresso machine, Bluetooth speaker. These are the ones to book if you want outdoor space without leaving your room.

On the first floor, looking directly at the Blue Mansion. Wall-to-wall windows give you a front-row seat to the famous indigo facade across Leith Street. Calming earth tones, king beds on restored timber floors, and a spacious bathroom with separate shower, freestanding bathtub, and marble vanity. Custom furniture, lanterns, ceramics and large-scale calligraphy by local artists throughout. Espresso machine, Bluetooth speaker, minibar with some complimentary items, smart TV.

Located at the rear of the building on the upper floor, 47.8–50.4 sqm. These open onto a shared rooftop garden — good for early morning Qi Gong or evening drinks with views over the inner streets of George Town. Vaulted ceilings from the original roof structure make the rooms feel larger than the square footage suggests. King bed on restored timber floors, separate shower and bathtub, marble vanity, daybed by the window, custom local woodwork (by Dads Wood), commissioned calligraphy above the bed. Blackout curtains, hidden smart TV, indirect lighting. Herbal bath soaks from the spa provided in-room.
