Dar Tantor
Ancient heritage meets thoughtful luxury. Rustic but not rough. Candlelit corridors, handmade ceramics, vinyl record players in each room, personalized scents chosen by guests. Sustainability-driven and deliberately low-tech — naturally ventilated instead of air-conditioned, lit by candlelight. The kind of place where you arrive expecting discomfort and leave raving about the food.
Visit October through March for the coolest temperatures — summer can make the naturally ventilated rooms warm at night
Why It Matters
One of the world's only operating hotels built entirely within a functioning heritage site using traditional techniques. Named to TIME Magazine's 2024 World's Greatest Places list. Listed on the Michelin Guide. Designed by Harvard Fellow architect Shahira Fahmy. Located inside AlUla Old Town — the nearest property of its kind to the UNESCO-listed Hegra ruins.
Dar Tantora sits inside AlUla's 12th-century Old Town — a maze of mudbrick houses that have been painstakingly restored rather than reimagined. The 30 rooms (called 'Dars') are actual centuries-old homes, each structurally different, lit by traditional iron lanterns and candlelight, with reed-covered ceilings and hand-carved doors. Architect Shahira Fahmy, a Harvard Fellow, designed the restoration using the same ancient materials and irrigation systems as the original buildings. There's an infinity pool overlooking the palm oasis, a signature restaurant helmed by a Michelin-starred chef, and a daily rhythm of cultural rituals — breadmaking at sunrise, Saudi coffee ceremonies, lantern-lighting at dusk — that make it feel less like a hotel stay and more like you've been invited into the village.
