Why It Matters
Named one of TIME magazine's 'World's Greatest Places 2024' and on Condé Nast Traveler's 'Hot List 2024'. The building is a protected National Monument dating to the 1600s, and Restaurant De Mark is run in collaboration with two Michelin-starred Amsterdam chefs. Only 14 rooms total, so it stays genuinely intimate.
De Durgerdam sits on the waterfront of Lake IJmeer in the former fishing village of Durgerdam — just 15 minutes by car from Amsterdam's city center, but worlds away in feel. Housed in a 17th-century National Monument inn (once called the Prins te Paard, a stop on the East India trading route), the property was meticulously restored by Aedes and designed by Amsterdam studio Buro Belen. The result: 14 rooms and suites that feel like an Old Master painting brought to life, anchored by a seriously good restaurant, De Mark.

Located in the guesthouse building adjoining the main 17th-century inn. East-facing with warm morning light and garden views. The styling leans into Dutch Golden Age references — putty tones, sunshine ochre, cracked ceramic tiling from Tichelaar. Comfortable without being fussy.

Also in the guesthouse, but with the upgrade of a private veranda that steps directly into the evergreen garden. East-facing for morning light. The same Buro Belen-led styling as the Classic rooms, but with that outdoor connection making it feel significantly more spacious.

Two rooms in this category: De Kerk (guesthouse, with a private garden) and De Ziel (in the main historical house). Styled in sunshine ochre with lush green Tichelaar tiling and marble accents. De Ziel has the historic character of the 17th-century inn around it; De Kerk gives you a private garden.

The most atmospheric room in the hotel. Features the famous 'bedstee' — a traditional Dutch alcove bed set into a steep-roofed nook. Cosy but tight if you're tall. The only room with a bathtub. Staff light the log-burner before you return each evening. Part of the Romantic Getaway package.

The third suite in the main historic building, with views of both the lake and the meadows. Like all suites, it carries the unique architectural charm of this National Monument inn and comes with the suite-exclusive KASSL Editions raincoat.
