Domaine d'Auriac
Old-world French country house with genuine family warmth. Not a corporate luxury hotel — the owner and her family are actively present. Traditional furnishings, high ceilings, floral gardens. Newer suites lean more modern and sculptural. Relaxed, unhurried, and rooted in Occitan character.
Book the gastronomic restaurant well in advance — it only opens Wed evenings, Thu–Sat lunch and dinner, and Sun lunch. Closed Mon and Tue entirely.
Why It Matters
One of the very few 5-star Relais & Châteaux properties in the Aude, with a Michelin-recognized gastronomic restaurant, a working 18-hole golf course on the grounds, and genuine multi-generational family ownership. Sits literally on top of an ancient fortification that predates Carcassonne's medieval walls.
A 19th-century manor house built on the site of the ancient Carsac Oppidum — where the story of Carcassonne began, and now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three generations of the Rigaudis family have run this Relais & Châteaux estate, and that warmth is something you feel the moment you pull up. The 18-hole golf course rolls out across what were once the estate's own vineyards, two very different restaurants feed you well, and the 300-year-old Mediterranean park keeps everything quiet.
