Why It Matters
The only all-suite hotel with seafront access in George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the original Grand Tour hotels of Asia alongside Raffles and The Oriental Bangkok. Heritage Wing reopened in December 2019 after a comprehensive restoration. The hotel celebrates its 140th anniversary in 2025.
The Eastern & Oriental — the E&O to anyone who's been — is the only seafront hotel in George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's been that way since 1885. Founded by the same Sarkies Brothers who built Raffles Singapore and The Strand in Rangoon, the hotel splits across two very different personalities: the Heritage Wing, a white-colonnaded colonial original with Moorish minarets and a soaring echo-dome lobby, and the Victory Annexe, a modern 15-storey tower opened in 2013. Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling once slept here. The opening scene of Crazy Rich Asians was filmed in the lobby. That kind of heritage doesn't need a hard sell.

The crown jewel of the Heritage Wing at 241 sqm. Located on the 2nd floor, this one-bedroom suite has a king four-poster bed, private balconies with sea views, a generous lounge, a guest restroom, a dining area with bar, and a kitchenette. The bathroom has an ornate longbath flanked by dual vanity sinks. The kind of suite Somerset Maugham would have written a novel in.
