El Rey Court
Retro Route 66 motor court meets contemporary Southwest cool. As one editor put it: 'Dennis Hopper meets Georgia O'Keeffe.' The vibe is genuinely laid-back — locals drink at the bar, free live music plays on the lawn, and the Swim Club is open to the neighborhood. It feels like a community hangout that happens to have guest rooms.
Always request a room away from Cerrillos Road — back rooms are significantly quieter and more atmospheric
Why It Matters
A Michelin Guide-listed property that earns its stripes by being just as popular with Santa Fe locals as with out-of-towners. La Reina is a legitimate destination bar. The property has been on the Condé Nast Traveler radar and is one of the more characterful places to stay in a city full of adobe hotels.
El Rey Court is a 1936 adobe motor court on old Route 66 (Cerrillos Road) that's been fully reimagined into an 86-room boutique hotel spread across five acres of old-growth gardens. The original Northern New Mexico architecture is intact — whitewashed stucco, exposed ponderosa pine beams, hand-painted tile — and the 2018 renovation layered in contemporary Southwestern art, midcentury-inspired furniture, and a proper mezcal bar. No two rooms are alike, which is either charming or maddening depending on your luck with the draw.
