Elena de Cobre
Colonial-Brutalist hybrid. Warm terracotta and antique wood below, raw copper and clean lines above. Art-forward, architecturally serious, and genuinely local in feel.

Why It Matters
One of the only hotels in Mexico where a 19th-century colonial mansion forms the literal foundation for a Brutalist copper-clad upper structure — designed by Mexican architect Mario Plasencia and featured on Dwell magazine's definitive list of architects and designers. The building's historic patio pergola is under INAH protection.
Elena de Cobre sits in the city's oldest restored colonial mansion, but don't expect a dusty heritage museum stay. Architect Mario Plasencia planted a Brutalist copper-clad structure right on top of the 19th-century casona, and somehow it works. Original mosaic floors, wooden-beam ceilings, and a sun-lit clay pergola patio on the ground floor; bold copper facade and a rooftop pool with a glass-ceiling bar directly above it on top. The building itself is recognized by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History — and it survived two major floods, which tells you something about how solid this place is.
