San Francisco
Grand historic landmark with old-world formality and genuine character. Traditional in the best sense — this is white-glove, concierge-at-your-elbow luxury rooted in over a century of hosting presidents, rock stars, and heads of state. Not cutting-edge design, not boutique minimalism. It's unapologetically stately.
Book a Bay-view room on a high floor — the views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge through the large picture windows are genuinely spectacular
Why It Matters
Built in 1907, this is the hotel that gave the entire Fairmont brand its name. Tony Bennett first sang 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' here in December 1961. Nearly every US president since its opening has stayed here, earning it the nickname 'White House of the West.' The Tonga Room — a tiki bar built around a former indoor swimming pool, complete with artificial rainstorms and a live band on a floating boat — has been operating since 1945. The 6,000 sq ft Penthouse spanning the entire 8th floor is one of the most storied hotel suites in America.
The Fairmont San Francisco is the original flagship of the Fairmont Hotels brand, opened in 1907 after architect Julia Morgan rebuilt it following the devastating 1906 earthquake. It sits at the top of Nob Hill, right at the confluence of all three of San Francisco's remaining cable car lines — the only hotel in the city with that claim. The Beaux Arts main building has 14-foot vaulted ceilings, marble bathrooms, and panoramic views taking in the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Coit Tower. Think grand staircases, soaring domed lobbies, and a legendary tiki bar that opened in 1945 and hasn't lost a step.
