FAUNA Montevideo
Eclectic mid-century boutique — part heritage preservation project, part design gallery. Vintage movie posters, custom headboards, marble countertops, and a courtesy bar in the shared lounge give it a distinctly personal, lived-in feel.
Atelier Castellano, the café directly across the street run by musician/instrument builder Nacho, is the go-to breakfast spot — guests consistently recommend it
Why It Matters
Ranks #2 of 95 specialty lodgings in Montevideo on TripAdvisor and scores 9.6 on Booking.com from 700+ reviews. It's one of the only authentically restored heritage boutique properties in Ciudad Vieja, and it's completely owner-operated. The building has no elevator and no breakfast service — both deliberate choices that keep the experience intimate and true to its character.
FAUNA is a 10-room boutique property inside a restored 1927 heritage building on Sarandí, the main pedestrian artery of Montevideo's Old City. The owners — reportedly an architect and an antique furniture dealer — stripped the place back to its bones and rebuilt it with Carrara marble staircases, original American pine floors, period plaster moldings, and colorful stained-glass windows, then layered in mismatched mid-century furniture, contemporary art, and handmade headboards. Rooms run 20–23 m² and are small but thoughtfully done; the real draw is the building itself and the owner Jeronimo, who operates more like a well-connected local fixer than a hotel manager.
