Flavia Hotel
Brutalist-exterior, art-gallery-interior boutique. Every room is named after an idea or space — Bunker, Teatro, Biblioteca, Selva — and each feels genuinely distinct. Common areas read like a well-designed private home, not a hotel lobby.
Saturday nights bring loud DJ music on the rooftop until midnight — ask for a room away from the rooftop if you're a light sleeper
Why It Matters
One of the most architecturally ambitious small hotels in Mexico. Designed by João Boto Cæiro of RootStudio without conventional plans — the building form was developed directly during construction, adapting to the mountain slope. Landscaping by Luis Zárate, the same designer behind Oaxaca's celebrated Ethnobotanical Garden. Featured in the Michelin Guide and Metropolis Magazine.
Flavia is a raw concrete Brutalist sculpture of a hotel sitting on a steep mountainside at the edge of Oaxaca City, right where the urban fabric meets the San Felipe Nature Reserve. Designed by local multidisciplinary firm RootStudio — literally without plans or technical drawings, built the way sculpture is built — it opened in 2022 with 11 adults-only rooms, each completely different from the next. The exterior is all gray, sloped mass; step inside and it switches to teak wall panels, veined marble floors, LED-lit translucent stone, and a serious collection of contemporary Oaxacan art.
