Why It Matters
A Grade II-listed 1868 shipping warehouse transformed into a seriously stylish boutique hotel. The building's history connects directly to the Peterloo Massacre and the Suffragette movement — cocktails in The Peterman bar are named after local historical figures. Forty-Seven is a boutique hotel inside a Grade II-listed former shipping warehouse called Lancashire House, designed by Walters, Barker and Ellis and built in 1868. The building sits on the corner of Peter Street and Southmill Street, right in the part of Manchester that saw both the Peterloo Massacre and the Suffragette movement — and the hotel wears that history on its sleeve. Bold, Art Deco-inflected interiors play off the original exposed brickwork and vaulted ceilings, while a sleep consultant helped spec out the rooms so the beds, linen, and acoustic design actually do their job. The Peterman bar downstairs is themed around a fictional gang of safecrackers, with cocktails named after local historical characters. TYGA, a fine-dining Indian restaurant (which replaced Asha's in December 2024), completes the in-house offering.
