Kyoto
Modern Japanese luxury — think darkly lit lobby for an air of mystery and privacy, lacquer trays made by Kyoto craftsmen, seasonal bonsai floating mid-air in the restaurant, and craftsman-made flower vases in each room. More contemporary hotel than traditional ryokan in physical form, but deeply Japanese in every ritual and detail.

Why It Matters
One of very few properties in Kyoto where every room — not just suites — includes a private onsen (hot spring) bath. The Michelin Guide lists it. The FUFU brand is revered among Japan insiders as a refined evolution of omotenashi hospitality. On-site cultural experiences (Zen meditation at Nanzenji, ikebana, kodo incense ceremony) are conducted by actual masters and historic institutions.
FUFU Kyoto is a 40-room luxury resort hotel in Kyoto's Okazaki/Nanzenji neighborhood, sitting beside the historic Lake Biwa Canal. The FUFU brand is Japan's modern take on traditional ryokan hospitality: the lobby smells of sandalwood and cherry blossom incense, ikebana flower arrangements line the corridors, and every single room comes with its own private hot spring bath carved from Yoshino hinoki cypress. It is selected by the Michelin Guide and sits within the FUFU Japan portfolio — which also has properties in Nikko, Hakone, Atami, and more.
