Gayana Eco Resort
Eco-luxury overwater resort with a genuine conservation mission. Thatched roofs, warm timber interiors, Borneo jungle pressing in from behind — earthy and indulgent at the same time.
Book the Ocean Villa if budget allows — the private balcony stairs drop you straight into the sea for snorkelling at your leisure.
Why It Matters
The only island resort in the world with its own on-site Marine Ecology Research Centre. Overwater villas in Malaysian Borneo at roughly Maldives-level ambience, but with a working conservation programme guests can actually participate in. Also holds Travelife Gold and Beyond Green sustainability certifications.
A 20-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu drops you on Gaya Island, where Gayana Marine Resort perches on stilts above Malohom Bay. All 45 villas sit over water — you wake up to the sound of the South China Sea moving beneath your floor. But this isn't just another tropical overwater property: Gayana runs the only on-site Marine Ecology Research Centre of any island resort in the world, actively propagating endangered giant clams and regenerating coral reefs. Guests can plant coral fragments, feed baby sharks, or simply drift off the balcony into crystal water.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Gaya Island hosts hornbills, kingfishers, and various species found in Borneo's coastal rainforest. The resort's jungle-edge position makes it a good base.
Hand-feed the resident fish that gather beneath the boardwalks and villas — a hit with children and easy enough that you can do it from your balcony.
Plant a coral fragment in the reef and receive a certificate plus updates on your coral's progress throughout the year. A meaningful take-home from a Borneo stay.
Guided tours of the on-site research centre — the only one of its kind on an island resort. Get up close with seahorses, bamboo sharks, cuttlefish, and sea turtles. Established in 2007, the centre runs giant clam restocking and coral reef regeneration programmes.
Gaya Island's interior is dense primary rainforest. Guided treks through the jungle canopy — expect monitor lizards, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills if you're lucky.
Guided boat or kayak excursion into the mangrove ecosystem around Gaya Island. Good for birdwatching and spotting juvenile marine species.
The resort can arrange private boat charters around Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park's five islands. Good for a day trip to Sapi or Manukan islands.
Self-guided kayaking with complimentary equipment. The bay is calm and sheltered — good for a relaxed paddle around the mangroves.
PADI Certified Dive Centre operates out of the resort. Waters off Gaya Island have sea turtles, clownfish, coral fish, and occasional whale shark sightings.
Equipment is complimentary. The reef directly off the resort is the best snorkel spot — staff point you to the right areas. Ocean Villa guests can snorkel straight off their balcony.
SUP equipment provided complimentary. The flat waters of Malohom Bay make it a good spot for beginners.
