Why It Matters
First guest-only (closed to the public) boutique hotel in San Diego. Listed on the Michelin Guide. A member of Design Hotels and part of Marriott Bonvoy. Built in 1904, it's a registered historic landmark in the Gaslamp Quarter. Bears, tigers, and monkeys were literally housed here before the San Diego Zoo's 1916 opening.
Housed in a 1904 Romanesque landmark that was once a bank, a jeweler's atelier, and briefly a zoo for exotic animals en route to the San Diego Zoo, the Granger Hotel is San Diego's first guest-only boutique hotel. The Mansour brothers — San Diego-born hoteliers — worked with designer Erika Baker to layer the original tin ceilings, wide 120-year-old corridors, and arched windows with rattan furniture, chartreuse velvet, vintage pieces from the 1920s–1970s, and murals by local artists. The result is moody, cinematic, and deliberately private: no public foot traffic, no lobby wanderers, no rooftop DJ.
