Why It Matters
Opened in 1997 as the first boutique hotel in Canada. Repeatedly recognised on the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice list and holds AAA/CAA Four Diamond status. Housed in the 1912 Dominion Fish & Fruit building in Old Quebec's Lower Town, Le Germain Hotel Quebec is considered by many the best small hotel in the city. The century-old stone and wood structure got a thorough modern makeover — warm lighting, plush bedding, and clean contemporary lines — without losing the bones of the original building. No pool, no full-service restaurant on-site, but the location on a quiet side street of the Old Port is unbeatable, and the beds alone are worth the price of admission.

The Classic
The entry-level room at Le Germain Quebec, and still a genuinely lovely place to sleep. Wood panelling, natural light flooding in, goose down comforter, feather pillows, and cushy armchairs. Available with a king, queen, or two double beds. Bathroom type and capacity vary by bed configuration — the two-double version accommodates families with two children. Not huge, but every inch is well-considered.

The Prestige
The largest and most sought-after category. At 410 sq ft it actually feels spacious for a boutique hotel of this age. Natural light pours in, there is a proper sitting area with an ergonomic workstation, and the king bed setup is the same top-quality linen as the other rooms. Corner Prestige rooms (notably room 506) reportedly have views over the port and the St. Lawrence. The only room type that can accommodate a duo in-room massage.
