Hacienda San Angel
Colonial romance, heavy on antiques, sacred art, carved wood, and candlelit staircases. Think four-poster beds, armoires from the 1800s, and stone fountains in lush garden courtyards — the opposite of a beach club resort.
The Celestial Suite was Richard Burton's actual bedroom — book it for the four-poster bed and private palapa terrace with bay views.
Why It Matters
Built on Richard Burton's former home 'Casa Bur-Sus,' the property is soaked in Old Hollywood legend. Each of the 12 suites is individually furnished with museum-worthy antiques and colonial art. The rooftop restaurant hosts live mariachi six nights a week with unobstructed fireworks views over the bay.
Hacienda San Angel is a 12-suite boutique hotel perched above the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta's Old Town. The property was originally Richard Burton's villa — he bought it as a Valentine's Day gift for his wife Susan in 1977 — and it evolved into a hotel in 2003 under founder Janice Chatterton, who connected four adjacent colonial villas into one seamless compound. No beach access, but the panoramic views of Banderas Bay, the Sierra Madre mountains, and the city's terracotta rooftops are hard to argue with.
