Hotel 71 Quebec City
Contemporary urban boutique inside a historic banking landmark. Modern and minimal with warm, cozy touches — not a design showpiece, more a comfortable elevated stay.
Ask for a Classic+ or Superior+ room on floors 5–7 for St. Lawrence River views — same room category, notably better outlook.
Why It Matters
The building itself is a piece of Quebec City history — the original HQ of the Banque Nationale, once the anchor of what locals called the 'Wall Street of Quebec City.' The penthouse suite with its 600 sq ft private terrace overlooking the Old Port is one of the most distinctive suites in the city. CAA 4-Diamond rated and featured in Condé Nast Traveler. The in-house Il Matto restaurant has become a standalone dining destination in its own right.
A former 19th-century bank building turned 60-room boutique hotel, sitting on a quiet stretch of Rue Saint-Pierre in Old Québec's Lower Town. The bones are neo-classical — dressed stone façade, high ceilings, original architectural details — but the rooms are decisively contemporary. Think clean lines, oversized windows, hardwood floors. It works. The hotel opened in 2005 after the Gilbert family converted what was once Canada's first French-speaking bank (Banque Nationale, 1856) into something genuinely worth staying in.
