Hotel Adlon Kempinski
Grand European palace hotel with genuine historical gravitas. The lobby never quiets down. Locals come in for the spectacle even if they can't afford a room, and heads of state occupy the suites overlooking the Gate. Formal without being stiff, historical without feeling like a museum.
The Adlon Currywurst at the Lobby Lounge & Bar is a real thing — served with gold leaf, chips, and milk bread. Order it.
Why It Matters
The only hotel in Berlin where you can watch the sun set over the Brandenburg Gate from your bed. It has hosted virtually every major world leader, royalty, and cultural figure since 1907 — from Kaiser Wilhelm II to Queen Elizabeth II and Michael Jackson. The lobby elephant fountain and the Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer are both Berlin institutions.
Berlin's most famous hotel, sitting directly opposite the Brandenburg Gate on Pariser Platz. The original Hotel Adlon opened in 1907 and became the city's most prestigious address almost overnight — Kaiser Wilhelm II, Chaplin, Einstein, Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo all passed through. The original was destroyed by fire at the end of WWII, and the current building opened in 1997, rebuilt on the same footprint with heavy design nods to the original. The lobby's elephant fountain — an almost absurd fantasy of frogs, elephants, and a Thai-style roof — is a genuine Berlin landmark in its own right.
