Hotel Akureyri
Playful, eclectic, and locally rooted. Retro-inspired decor with a design-conscious edge. Feels like a boutique city hotel that happens to be in a town of 20,000 people — which is exactly the point.

Why It Matters
Featured in the Michelin Guide hotel selection. Houses NORTH restaurant, run by Gunnar Karl Gíslason — the chef behind Dill, Iceland's first Michelin-starred restaurant. Also operates an on-site hydroponic urban farm (Iceland's first in a hotel) powered entirely by renewable energy. One of very few genuinely boutique options in North Iceland.
Hotel Akureyri is a design-forward boutique hotel spread across four distinct buildings on the main street of Iceland's northern capital. Family-run since 1996, it punches well above its weight for a city of this size — Michelin Guide-listed, home to a serious restaurant by Iceland's most celebrated chef, and built around a genuinely unusual concept: a hydroponic urban farm growing produce for the kitchen using 100% renewable energy. Rooms are compact but thoughtfully done, the bar pours local craft beers until midnight, and the whole operation has a personality that bigger hotels in the country can't match.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel's lobby store stocks products made from herbs grown in the Urban Farm, plus goods sourced from small regional producers around North Iceland — rhubarb, artisan cheeses, honey, sauces, syrups, and sodas. An unexpected and genuinely interesting stop before leaving town.
The hotel team can brief guests on the best local spots for aurora hunting. With 3+ winter nights in Akureyri, there's roughly an 80% chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Staff are happy to help scout locations.
Hotel Akureyri operates Iceland's first hotel-based hydroponic vertical farm inside one of the hotel buildings — a converted old laundry room. The fully automated system uses 100% renewable energy and clean water (no soil, no pesticides) to grow fresh herbs, sprouts, leafy greens, and even the world's hottest pepper (Carolina Reaper) year-round. Guests are invited in to see the operation and learn about sustainable food production.
