Hotel Antumalal
Mid-century modernist meets Chilean lake lodge. Think Bauhaus lines, araucaria wood paneling, slate floors, leather armchairs, and a roaring fireplace in every room. Historic without being stuffy. Homey without being shabby.

Why It Matters
One of South America's most iconic small hotels. Opened in 1950 to a design by architect Jorge Elton drawing on Bauhaus and Frank Lloyd Wright principles. The hotel was deliberately built to withstand volcanic eruptions. The Royal Chalet is the room where Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed. It also claims to be Chile's first fishing lodge — guests used to catch trout from Lake Villarrica and hand it to the kitchen for dinner.
Hotel Antumalal is a Bauhaus-inspired boutique hotel that opened in 1950, built on a rocky promontory above Lake Villarrica in a 5-hectare private park, just 2 km from downtown Pucón. Founded by Czech immigrants Guillermo and Catalina Pollak — who arrived from Prague in 1938 — it started as a lakeside tea house before the patriarch boldly asked the visiting Chilean president for a loan to build the full hotel. The family is now on its third generation of ownership, and the place still feels like a home rather than a business. Queen Elizabeth II, Neil Armstrong, James Stewart, Emma Thompson, and Isabel Allende have all stayed here. Their photos hang in the lobby. Every room has a fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows, and direct lake views. It's genuinely special — and the closest thing Chile has to a living architectural monument you can actually sleep in.
