Hotel Ao Kamakura
Sleek coastal Japanese contemporary — minimal, calming, and unmistakably local. The restaurant roots run deep here; food and sake are as central to the experience as the rooms.
Request the roof terrace at check-in — the 4th-floor view at sunset over the Shonan Sea is outstanding
Why It Matters
Selected by both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. The property grew directly from Kamakura Matsubara-An, one of Kamakura's most respected soba restaurants, making the dining experience genuinely exceptional rather than an afterthought. Listed by Rakuten Travel with Japan Quality accreditation for exemplary service and authentic Japanese experience.
Born out of the beloved Matsubara-An soba restaurant group, HOTEL AO KAMAKURA is a 16-room seafront boutique hotel designed by architect Manabu Chiba. Every room takes its name from a specific shade of blue in Japanese — cobalt, indigo, navy — and the building wraps around a central courtyard that keeps the sea breeze moving through all day. The look is contemporary Japanese with serious woodwork, floor-to-ceiling windows, and private terraces on every room.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The beach is literally across the street — about 50 meters. SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) and surfing are available nearby. A morning walk along the shore before breakfast is a classic start to the day here.
Enoshima Island is visible from the hotel and reachable on foot. The striking island has caves, a botanical garden, and a lighthouse observation tower. Walking distance from the hotel along the coast.
The hotel's staff are knowledgeable about the area and happy to advise on routes. Highlights within easy reach include Hokoku-ji Temple (bamboo grove), the Great Buddha at Hase, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine — all accessible via the Enoshima Electric Railway from Koshigoe Station, a 2-minute walk away.
The hotel occasionally hosts morning yoga sessions on the rooftop terrace. Schedule varies — ask at check-in about current dates and times.
The 4th-floor banquet halls — UMI and SORA — host weddings, dinner parties, meetings, and exhibitions. A garden chapel with a terrace overlooking Enoshima is available for open-air ceremonies. Bespoke food and hospitality packages arranged with the hotel team.
The 4th-floor rooftop terrace faces directly over the Shonan Sea. Best at sunset, when the sky over Enoshima and the water puts on a show. Staff actively recommend heading up on arrival if the timing is right.
