Hotel Bella Grande occupies a lovingly restored 1899 building a two-minute walk from Copenhagen's City Hall Square. The ground floor is all Italian theater — candy-striped banquettes, a checkerboard marble atrium, oversized urns overflowing with extravagant blooms — designed by Danish studio Tonen with a deliberate Wes Anderson-esque sensibility. Upstairs, 109 rooms take a more subdued palette, which reads as sophisticated restraint rather than an afterthought. At 16 to 18 sqm these rooms feel more comfortable for two. Some have a balcony, others look onto the atrium courtyard. The courtyard-facing rooms are atmospheric but can be warmer in summer and catch more noise from Donna below. Street-facing is the safer pick for light sleepers.

A smart configuration for families: a comfortable double bed in the main room and bunk beds in an adjoining room, keeping everyone together without being on top of each other. At 24 sqm it is practical rather than spacious, but the layout works. Kids respond well to the bunk beds.

The sweet spot for most guests. At 21 to 24 sqm there is genuine room to move around, large street-facing windows in many units, and a red-and-white tiled bathroom. The Scandi approach of separate duvets for each sleeper is a nice touch. Some rooms overlook the courtyard, others face the street or the calm backyard — ask for street-facing to maximise light and airflow.
