Hotel Bellevue Palace Bern
Classic Belle Époque grand hotel with a stained-glass lobby ceiling, gilt salons, and stucco ceilings. Formal but not stuffy — the bar draws local politicians alongside tourists. Think ceremony, not pretension.
The Bellevue Bar terrace in summer is the best al fresco seat in Bern — views straight to the Alps and Aare
Why It Matters
The only grand hotel in the Swiss capital, publicly owned but privately managed by Michel Reybier Hospitality. Awarded 2 Michelin Keys. The Bellevue Bar was Switzerland's first 'American Bar' and a WWII spy hotspot documented in John le Carré novels. The Presidential Suite name is not aspirational — actual sitting heads of state use it.
The Bellevue Palace is Switzerland's only state-owned grand hotel — the Swiss Confederation holds 99.7% of its shares. It sits directly next to the Federal Parliament in Bern's UNESCO-listed Old Town, and has been doing so since 1865. The building reopened in 1913 in neoclassical style and the guest list since then reads like a who's who of world history: Churchill, Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II, Allen Dulles. Today it holds 2 Michelin Keys and 15 GaultMillau points, and is managed by Michel Reybier Hospitality.
