Hotel de Rome
Monumental historic architecture meets restrained contemporary luxury. Think serious stone-and-marble grandeur with magenta urns and neon art at the entrance — weighty but not stuffy. The palette runs to reds, blues, and stone neutrals, with green and gold reserved for the spa's vault spaces.
Request a Premier Room or Grand Premier Room for direct Bebelplatz views — worth the upgrade for the light and high ceilings.
Why It Matters
The only Berlin hotel set in a restored 19th-century bank building listed as a heritage landmark. The bank's main hall is now a glass-topped Grand Ballroom, the original jewellery vault is The Spa, and the bank directors' offices are specialty suites. After WWII the building served as the GDR's state bank — layers of history that most hotels can only dream about.
A converted 1889 Dresdner Bank headquarters sitting right on Bebelplatz in Berlin's Mitte district. The building has serious bones: neo-Renaissance stone façade, original oak-paneled executive offices, and a former jewel vault that's now home to Berlin's longest hotel pool. Opened as a hotel in 2006 after a meticulous restoration, it's part of the Rocco Forte collection and belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World. History isn't just a talking point here — one of the specialty suites still has WWII bullet and grenade fragments embedded in its original wood paneling.
