Why It Matters
120 rooms including 34 suites, with the 172 sqm Nijinsky Suite at the top. The Secret Garden is the draw — a working aperitivo culture happens there nightly at the Stravinskij Bar. Le Jardin restaurant under chef Fulvio Pierangelini is a genuine Rome destination. History in every corner: Picasso and Stravinsky were regulars, and the hotel once served as RAI broadcasting headquarters before Rocco Forte transformed it.
Hotel de Russie sits on Via del Babuino, slotted between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps, and it plays that address hard. The building dates to 1816–1820, designed by architect Giuseppe Valadier, and reopened under Rocco Forte in 2000. The whole place revolves around a tiered 'Secret Garden' — rose bushes, orange trees, mature pine, and a small waterfall threading between three nymphaeums — that Romans treat as their own living room. Jean Cocteau called it 'paradise on earth' in 1917. Picasso stayed here for months that same year. The crowd and the reputation have barely changed.
