Insider Tip
1/6

Ask about named rooms when booking — the Håkan Hellström Room (133) has purple wallpaper and a balcony on Drottningtorget; the Jussi Björling Room (136) has a gramophone and its own balcony.

Why It Matters

Third oldest hotel in Sweden still in operation (open since 1859). A heritage-listed building where the Swedish Artists' Association was founded in room 134 in 1886. The 'American Bar' dates to 1884. Room 265 was used to film the movie BORG. Named rooms include the Håkan Hellström Room (a music video was filmed here), the Jussi Björling Room, and the Prince's Room (Prince Bertil's regular quarters). The hotel, including its restaurant, holds the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

One of Sweden's oldest hotels, Hôtel Eggers has stood on Drottningtorget since 1859 — just 78 steps from Gothenburg's Central Station. The building is heritage-listed (K-marked), and inside you get period wrought iron, stained glass, velvet sofas, original stucco ceilings, and a 1893 elevator with golden wallpaper and a crystal chandelier. It's genuinely atmospheric without being stuffy. The 69 rooms are all individually decorated, which means no two are the same — some have four-poster beds and gramophones; others have clawfoot tubs and balconies overlooking the square.
