Why It Matters
The only hotel in Mexico's Riviera Maya to hold Three Michelin Keys — the guide's highest honor — and the first independent hotel in Mexico to earn Forbes Five Stars for five consecutive years (2022–2026). Hotel Esencia is a 50-acre beachfront estate on the Xpu-Ha bay, roughly halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum — far enough from both that you barely notice either exists. Originally built as the private home of an Italian duchess, it was reimagined in 2014 into one of the most awarded boutique hotels in the Americas: three consecutive Michelin Keys (the only property in the Riviera Maya to hold them), five consecutive Forbes Travel Guide Five Stars, and two straight years on the World's 50 Best Hotels list. Rooftop Wellness Suite
The property's wellness-focused accommodations sit above the tree canopy with their own private rooftop terraces, plunge pools, and private fitness studios. These were introduced after the hotel won the 2021 Forbes Wellness Star of the Year award.
The Esencia Mansion
Described as one of the most grand private villas in the entire Riviera Maya. Lofted above the tree canopy — The Telegraph says it 'seems to have the Riviera Maya all to itself.' This is the ultimate Esencia experience and the property's flagship offering for whole-group or high-end buyouts.
The Esencia Suite
