Hotel Esencia
Understated aristocratic cool. Think mid-century furniture alongside Mexican antiques, crisp whitewashed walls, and an art collection that actually merits attention. The vibe is more 'stylish friend's beach house' than grand resort — zero velvet ropes, no lobby show-off moments, just quietly exceptional everything. The art and design crowd (and apparently Hollywood) have figured it out.
Check in at 'Casa Maya' — the check-in location differs from the main property; you'll receive an email with instructions 72 hours before arrival.
Why It Matters
The only hotel in Mexico's Riviera Maya to hold Three Michelin Keys — the guide's highest honor — and the first independent hotel in Mexico to earn Forbes Five Stars for five consecutive years (2022–2026). It also appeared on the World's 50 Best Hotels list in 2023 and 2024. The spa is regularly called Mexico's best. And the property sits on one of the last undeveloped stretches of Riviera Maya coastline, with a nesting beach for six species of sea turtles.
Hotel Esencia is a 50-acre beachfront estate on the Xpu-Ha bay, roughly halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum — far enough from both that you barely notice either exists. Originally built as the private home of an Italian duchess, it was reimagined in 2014 into one of the most awarded boutique hotels in the Americas: three consecutive Michelin Keys (the only property in the Riviera Maya to hold them), five consecutive Forbes Travel Guide Five Stars, and two straight years on the World's 50 Best Hotels list. Just 47 suites and 4 villas spread across the jungle and beachfront, so even when the place is full you won't feel it.
