Hotel Humano
Barefoot luxury meets surf culture. Midcentury modernism and Scandinavian sensibility filtered through a deeply Oaxacan lens — exposed concrete, raw brick, tropical wood, wine-toned ceramics. Feels residential rather than resort-y. Adults-only and intentionally low-key.
The lobby coffee bar pivots into an izakaya-style spot at night — Japanese skewers, sake, and beer are a fun find in Mexico.
Why It Matters
Grupo Habita's latest Puerto Escondido property and a Design Hotels member. Architecture by Jorge Hernández de la Garza with interiors by Madrid's Plantea Estudio. All materials handmade in local ateliers, assembled by area artisans. Featured in the Michelin Guide hotel selection.
Hotel Humano is Grupo Habita's third swing at Puerto Escondido, and arguably their most considered. On a pedestrian-only lane in La Punta Zicatela, the 39-room property sits a five-minute walk from Playa Zicatela — home to the infamous Mexican Pipeline — and delivers concrete-and-clay minimalism with serious design credentials. Rooms are custom-fitted with locally crafted furniture, burgundy San Pedro Ceramics tiles, and original drawings by Mexico City artist Lucio Muniain. The rooftop spa, courtyard pool, and chef-driven Bistró give you plenty of reasons to stay put between surfs.
