Request a room facing the water (harbor side) — the views are significantly better than the highway-facing rooms.

Why It Matters

Claims to be America's first net-zero energy hotel. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, LEED Platinum certified, and generates 100% of its own electricity via a solar microgrid. It's also a rare case of genuine architectural significance meeting functional hospitality.

Hotel Marcel is a 1960s Brutalist landmark designed by Marcel Breuer for the Armstrong Rubber Company — later Pirelli Tire — transformed into a design-forward, all-electric hotel. The nine-story concrete box sits off I-95 in New Haven's Long Wharf district, and yes, it's next to an IKEA. But inside, the interiors are genuinely stunning: Bauhaus-inspired minimalism with custom walnut beds, Breuer-designed Cesca desk chairs, and meticulously restored 1960s light fixtures. What really sets it apart is the sustainability story: LEED Platinum certified, 100% fossil-fuel-free, powered by over 1,000 rooftop solar panels running its own microgrid.

Corner King Room

The corner position gives these rooms significantly more floor space and a broader window configuration, letting in more of that Long Wharf skyline. At ~549 sq ft they're among the roomiest standard options in the building. Worth the upgrade if you're staying multiple nights or just like breathing room.

Lightwell Room

Lightwell Room

Interior-facing rooms with minimal natural light — a byproduct of the building's original floor plan. The hotel is upfront about these, and they're typically the more affordable option. Tech features and finishes are identical to windowed rooms, but these are notably darker. Only book these if natural light genuinely doesn't matter to you.

Standard 2 Queens

The two-queen layout at around 302 sq ft — compact but functional, good for families or two guests who don't need a king. The 'Deluxe' two-queen configuration runs larger and is frequently recommended by guests for the extra breathing room.
