Hotel Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei
Contemporary Japanese craft minimalism. Quiet and deliberate. The GO ON design collective — six heirs to Kyoto's traditional craft studios — shaped everything from the bamboo elevator halls to the room wall textiles. It feels like a gallery that you also sleep in.
Book a north-facing room (Serenity Twin, Garden Double, Bettei Twin, or Bettei Suite) for Japanese garden and temple gate views — south-facing rooms look onto Marutamachi street.
Why It Matters
The Okura Group's first small luxury hideaway format in Japan. The interior design is the work of GO ON, a collective of six successors to Kyoto's most storied traditional craft houses, including Nishijin textile maker Hosoo. The hotel sits directly adjacent to the Okazaki Betsuin temple, letting guests attend morning Buddhist services for free. And the Nouvelle Epoque restaurant pays culinary tribute to Masakichi Ono, the father of Japanese French cuisine.
A refined 60-room small luxury hotel that opened in 2022 on the grounds adjacent to the historic Okazaki Betsuin temple in northeastern Kyoto. The whole place channels the wabi/sabi philosophy: rooms dressed in hand-woven Nishijin-ori textiles, corridors finished with Kaikado-inspired metalwork lighting, and a ground-floor French restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a traditional Japanese garden. Adults only — guests must be 12 or older.
